Strategic infrastructure is the enabler of the green transition

- for transport, energy and resource exchange and distribution

UNRIVALLED TRANSPORT AND ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE:
E45 and logistics - TEN-T railway - Deep sea port - H2 backbone - Sector coupling

Transport & logistics

Seamless international access by road, rail, and sea

Aabenraa offers connectivity with the E45 motorway, a major logistics center, and a combi terminal linking road and rail transport. The deep-sea port ensures global trade access, while nearby international airports in Billund, Sønderborg, and Hamburg strengthen international reach.

Green energy & waste heat

A hub for renewable energy and sector coupling

Aabenraa is a key player in green energy with large-scale RE parks and direct access to the hydrogen backbone. Power-to-X plants generate surplus heat, which can be reused for district heating and industrial processes, maximizing energy efficiency.

Circular water resources

Sustainable water solutions for PtX and food production

Aabenraa is developing innovative water recycling systems to supply ultra-pure water for PtX and industry. By treating wastewater, the municipality ensures a sustainable water supply while reducing environmental impact.

A strategic location with industrial transport infrastructure

Aabenraa is a key logistics hub with direct access to Germany, Europe, and the Nordics. This prime location ensures seamless transport via road, rail, and sea, making it an ideal base for international trade and distribution. Businesses benefit from well-developed infrastructure that supports efficient supply chains and minimizes transport costs.

E45, logistics center, combi terminal, and railway

With the E45 motorway, a major logistics centre, and a state-of-the-art combi terminal, Aabenraa provides efficient road and rail connections. This infrastructure streamlines supply chains and optimizes freight movement across Europe. The well-integrated railway network ensures direct connections to key industrial regions, further enhancing logistical efficiency.

Deep sea port and international airports

The Port of Aabenraa offers deep-water access for global shipping, ensuring smooth maritime trade. It supports large cargo vessels and provides a crucial link for businesses relying on sea transport. Additionally, international airports in Billund, Sønderborg, and Hamburg provide fast and flexible transport options, connecting Aabenraa to key global markets.

First stop on the hydrogen backbone and vast RE energy

Aabenraa is a central hub for Denmark’s green energy transition, strategically positioned on the European hydrogen backbone. With vast renewable energy resources and a well-developed infrastructure, the municipality is primed for large-scale Power-to-X production and energy-intensive industries.

Hydrogen infrastructure, enhanced grid and sector coupling

Aabenraa is one of the first access points to the hydrogen backbone, ensuring efficient transport of green hydrogen to key industrial regions with three hydrogen stations. The municipality's central transformer startion is being expanded by a factor 10 and the municipality is part of Denmark's largest grid enhancement in history (Aarhus-Aabenraa). Sector coupling enables utilisation of surplus energyto be repurposed for district heating and industrial applications, and transportation of technical water to industry across a range of business zones.

Renewable energy and future growth

The municipality hosts some of Denmark’s largest renewable energy parks, with solar and wind power forming the foundation for large-scale PtX production. Continuous investment in energy infrastructure supports future expansion, making Aabenraa an ideal location for companies seeking sustainable energy solutions.
