First stop on the hydrogen backbone and vast RE energy

Aabenraa is a central hub for Denmark’s green energy transition, strategically positioned on the European hydrogen backbone. With vast renewable energy resources and a well-developed infrastructure, the municipality is primed for large-scale Power-to-X production and energy-intensive industries.

Hydrogen infrastructure, enhanced grid and sector coupling

Aabenraa is one of the first access points to the hydrogen backbone, ensuring efficient transport of green hydrogen to key industrial regions with three hydrogen stations. The municipality's central transformer startion is being expanded by a factor 10 and the municipality is part of Denmark's largest grid enhancement in history (Aarhus-Aabenraa). Sector coupling enables utilisation of surplus energyto be repurposed for district heating and industrial applications, and transportation of technical water to industry across a range of business zones.

Renewable energy and future growth

The municipality hosts some of Denmark’s largest renewable energy parks, with solar and wind power forming the foundation for large-scale PtX production. Continuous investment in energy infrastructure supports future expansion, making Aabenraa an ideal location for companies seeking sustainable energy solutions.

World-class infrastructure for seamless logistics and green energy

Padborg Logistics Centre

Padborg Transport Center is Denmark’s international transport hub, strategically located at the Danish-German border. As a key gateway for import and export, the center plays a crucial role in economic growth, handling over 32 million tons of cargo annually—nearly half of Denmark’s total freight crossing the border. With direct access to the E45 motorway and extensive railway connections, Padborg ensures efficient transport of goods across Europe.

Port of Aabenraa

The Port of Aabenraa is one of Denmark’s deepest public commercial ports, with a water depth of up to 18 meters, allowing for the arrival of large cargo vessels. The port specializes in handling bulk goods such as gravel, biomass, and lime, as well as project cargo for the wind turbine industry. Its central location in Southern Jutland, close to the motorway network and Padborg Transport Center, makes it a vital hub for import and export in the region.

Multi-modal infrastructure

Aabenraa combines road, rail, and sea transport into a seamless logistics network on the Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T route. The municipality's seamless integration of highways, rail terminals, and port facilities optimises supply chains, reducing costs and increasing efficiency. With charging stations for trucks and hydrogen refuelling stations on the way, as well as green fuel availability on the port, Aabenraa is fast becoming a green logistics hub.

Hydrogen Backbone

With the Danish hydrogen infrastructure - Danish Backbone West - launching in 2030, Aabenraa will be home to the first Danish hdyrogen stations and play a vital role in green energy distribution to the German hydrogen market. With three stations in planning and severalf hydrogen producers looking to invest in the area, the municipality actively supports hydrogen development and Power-to-X projects as part of its sustainable industrial growth.
