Strategic infrastructure is the enabler of the green transition

- for transport, energy and resource exchange and distribution

UNRIVALLED TRANSPORT AND ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE:
E45 and logistics - TEN-T railway - Deep sea port - H2 backbone - Sector coupling

A strategic location with industrial transport infrastructure

Aabenraa is a key cross-border logistics hub with direct access to Germany, Europe, and the Nordics. This prime location ensures seamless transport via road, rail, and sea, making it an ideal base for international trade and distribution. Businesses benefit from well-developed infrastructure that supports efficient supply chains and minimises transport costs.

E45, logistics center, combi terminal, and railway

With the E45 motorway, a major logistics centre, and a state-of-the-art combi terminal, Aabenraa provides efficient road and rail connections. This infrastructure streamlines supply chains and optimises freight movement across Europe. The well-integrated railway network ensures direct connections to key industrial regions, further enhancing logistical efficiency.

Deep sea port and international airports

The Port of Aabenraa offers deep-water access for global shipping, ensuring smooth maritime trade. It supports large cargo vessels and provides a crucial link for businesses relying on sea transport. Additionally, international airports in Billund, Sønderborg, and Hamburg provide fast and flexible transport options, connecting Aabenraa to key global markets.

World class energy infrastructure across national grid, green hydrogen, gas and e-fuels

Aabenraa is a central hub for Denmark's green energy transition, with world-class infrastructure connecting production to international offtakers. Strategically positioned on both gas net and the coming European hydrogen backbone, with what will be Denmark’s largest transformer station, the municipality is primed for large-scale hdyrogen production and a synergetic circular hub.

Hydrogen infrastructure, enhanced grid and sector coupling

A planned build-out of Aabenraa’s central transformer station in Kassø from 2027 will make it Denmark’s largest and a central access point for the sector integrated industry cluster in planning. In parallel, Aabenraa will be part of Denmark's largest grid enhancement in history (Aarhus-Aabenraa), safe-guarding supply for large-scale offtakers of power such as data centers and hydrogen producers. In addition, Aabenraa is one of the first access points on DHB1, the Danish hydrogen backbone, and will have three access points in total.

Renewable energy and future growth

To ensure realisation of all value streams between PtX and existing sectors, infrastructure connecting heat producers and offtakers and the delivery of technical water to industrial offtakers is already in planning, and a comprehensive plan for the nearly 1500ha industry park is in development, making Aabenraa an ideal choice for investors looking for world class infrastructure and sustainable supply.

World-class infrastructure for seamless logistics and green energy hub

Padborg
Logistics Centre

Padborg Transport Center is Denmark’s leading cross-border logistics hub, strategically located at the Danish–German border. As a key gateway for import and export, the center plays a crucial role in economic growth, handling over 32 million tons of cargo annually. With direct access to the E45 motorway and extensive railway connections, Padborg ensures efficient transport of goods across Europe.

Port of
Aabenraa

The Port of Aabenraa is one of Denmark’s deepest public commercial ports, with water depth up to 8 metres, allowing large vessel arrival. The port specialises in bulk goods such as gravel, biomass and lime, as well as project cargo for the wind energy industry. Its location in Southern Jutland, close to the motorway network and Padborg Transport Centre, makes it vital for regional import and export.

Multi-modal
infrastructure

Aabenraa combines road, rail and sea transport into a seamless logistics network on the Scandinavian–Mediterranean TEN-T route. Integrated highways, rail terminals and port facilities optimise supply chains and reduce costs. With charging stations for trucks and hydrogen refuelling stations, Aabenraa is fast becoming a sustainable production hub and symbiotic green logistics hub.

Hydrogen
Backbone

With the Danish Hydrogen Infrastructure – Danish Backbone West launching in 2030, Aabenraa will be home to the first hydrogen stations and play a vital role in European green hydrogen production and distribution. With three stations in planning and several hydrogen producers investing locally, the municipality actively supports hydrogen development and Power-to-X integration.
