Designated for production companies with fast-track conditions

Kassø in Aabenraa is designated as one of Denmark’s 11 national industrial parks under the political agreement "Red Carpet for Production Companies". The designation ensures faster permitting and strong framework conditions for production companies, while enabling the city council to harvest societal value and positive follow-on effects.

Sustainable technical water

A circular water supply for PtX turning waste water into green fuel

Aabenraa provides a circular supply of purified technical water for electrolysis by upgrading treated wastewater into a reliable resource for green fuel production. This solution reduces pressure on groundwater, supports industry, construction and agriculture, and is designed to scale with growing demand.

Southern Denmark's PtX hub for green hydrogen and e-fuels

Situated in Denmark's largest national industry park with direct access to the coming Danish Hydrogen Backbone lies the world's largest PtX facility, producing green e-methanol for shipping giant A.P. Moeller-Maersk and offtakers for sustainable plastic production LEGO and Novo Nordisk.

The Kassø area in Aabenraa is the first to complete an RFNBO-certified e-fuel value chain from solar power to electrolysis, e-methanol production to storage, and usage across several sectors. It will also be home to Denmark's largest transformer station after a 5 year build-out, and the first Danish hydrogen station on the European Hydrogen Backbone, connecting Danish suppliers to German offtakers by 2030.

Surplus heat – unlocking green growth and innovation

Aabenraa is leveraging surplus heat from PtX production to power urban farming, sustainable food innovation, circular materials production and other biosolutions. This approach strengthens industrial symbiosis, enabling circular energy flows while driving innovation in existing sectors.

Surplus heat: A unique opportunity for green growth

In municipal eyes, the growing energy sector is not just an opportunity for transitioning its traditional agriculture profile: It's a unique and powerful opportunity for sustainable growth and attraction of ambitious companies wishing to drive the transition with us. Making surplus heat available for production companies within urban farming, food and materials innovation, and wider biosolutions, Aabenraa is enabling circularity of energies as well as innovation in its existing sectors.

We facilitate synergies and sector integration

As a business forward municipality focussed on green transition and growth, we have designed end-to-end business services to enable a supported process from initial interest to post-investment support such as recruitment or spouse jobmatching. We work closely with investors to ensure they have the contacts, facilities and talent they need - so we can keep growing together.

The German-Danish Hydrogen Valley - with cross-border hydrogen infrastructure by 2030

Cross-border hydrogen infrastructure by 2030

The South Denmark Region is emerging as a green hydrogen hub, with multiple value chains, a multi-modal test centre in Måde, two 1GW PtX plants in the Esbjerg area, and a 52MW e-methanol facility in Kassø. Storage facilities at the Port of Aabenraa and offtake agreements with A.P. Møller–Maersk demonstrate the region’s strategic importance for shipping, aviation and heavy transport.

By 2030, a dedicated hydrogen pipeline between Denmark and Germany will be operational, with three stations in Aabenraa enabling industrial and transport offtake in both regions.

In early 2025, Aabenraa Municipality and regional partners launched a cross-border hydrogen cluster, supported by the Region of Southern Denmark and Land Schleswig-Holstein. The cluster will focus on building specific value chains and orchestrating collaboration across borders with fast-track permitting helping new projects scale more quickly within the ecosystem.
