Denmark's green gateway to Europe: Where renewable energy fuels strategic business growth

Strong political anchoring

A City Council empowering green growth and fast-track investments

Aabenraa sets the benchmark for rapid approvals, having greenlit Denmark’s first PtX facility in just 17 months. This achievement rests on firm political backing, strategic resource allocation and a clear mandate to act. Through proactive permitting and parallel processing of approvals, projects move forward without delay. The municipality serves as a central facilitator, aligning ministries, agencies and local stakeholders to ensure coordinated support. With adaptive processes and a willingness to address challenges as they arise, Aabenraa stands as a committed partner in progress - delivering swift, seamless and efficient project realisation.

Capacity secured for full-scale development

Power, water and capacity are secured for future development.

Aabenraa offers the conditions required to realise large-scale green energy development in a coherent and future-proof manner. All projects currently in dialogue – as well as additional follow-up initiatives – can be accommodated within existing and planned frameworks, ensuring reliable grid access for continued growth. At the same time, sufficient technical water is secured to support both Power-to-X facilities and heat-utilising industries. Together, these foundations enable green industrial expansion to proceed with clarity, stability and long-term certainty.

Powering PtX with renewable energy

Integrated renewable generation supporting large-scale PtX development

Abenraa combines large-scale solar and wind energy production with emerging Power-to-X facilities to ensure a direct and reliable supply of renewable electricity. The co-location of generation and PtX infrastructure strengthens operational efficiency and system integration.

Substantial onshore and offshore wind resources complement one of Northern Europe’s largest solar parks, creating a diversified renewable energy base. The proximity between renewable generation and PtX facilities reduces transmission complexity and supports stable large-scale operations. This integrated setup enables green electricity to be converted into e-methanol and other PtX products within a coherent local energy system. By aligning renewable production with industrial demand, Aabenraa reinforces sector coupling and establishes a resilient foundation for future green fuel development.

A full green energy value chain

Operational from solar to green fuels, bunkering - and distric heating

In Aabenraa, renewable power from wind and solar forms the foundation of a fully integrated Power-to-X value chain. Green power is used in electrolysis to produce green hydrogen, which is subsequently converted into e-methanol and other renewable fuels. Carbon dioxide from biogas production is captured and reused in the process, ensuring it becomes a resource rather than an emission.

The resulting e-fuels can replace fossil-based alternatives in maritime transport, industry and future e-SAF applications. Surplus heat generated throughout the process is recovered and supplied to district heating. By-products such as digestate further strengthen circular resource utilisation. Together, these integrated flows create a coherent, sector-coupled system that maximises value and supports large-scale green industrial development.
