European Energy and Mitsui have inaugurated the world’s largest commercial e-methanol facility in Kassø, marking a new chapter in Aabenraa’s green industrial development. After successful pilot runs in March, the plant is now officially in operation.

The Kassø Power-to-X plant uses renewable electricity and biogenic CO₂ from local biogas plants to produce 42,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually. This equals 53 million litres of green fuel - enough to power up to four container ships for a full year. European Energy's first client is Danish shipping giant A.P. Møller-Mærsk, with the methanol-powered vessel Laura Mærsk already operating. Lego and Novo Nordisk will also use the fuel to cut emissions from plastics production.

The plant was built in under two years and certified in April 2025 under the EU’s renewable fuel sustainability standards. With Japanese partner Mitsui owning 49 percent, the project reflects growing international interest in Denmark’s green transition. Mitsui sees Kassø as a global model for scaling e-methanol and reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors like shipping and chemicals.

European Energy hopes the lessons learned in Kassø will lead to more cost-effective production. It has already implemented technical innovations expected to reduce prices and is planning more PtX plants across Denmark and abroad. Read the full article here.
